How to store beets

How to store beets

Here we divide the scenarios for storing them into two types: winter storage method and non-winter storage method.

Temporary storage

In fact, the non-winter storage scenario refers to the approximately one month period from the time the beets are harvested in late autumn to the official onset of winter. Because the time is not very long, and it also paves the way for storage during the winter, temporary storage can also be added.

The method is very simple. Dig a trench that is no more than half a meter deep and one meter wide according to the amount you need to store. The length of this trench is determined by the amount you store. After digging, place the beets neatly in order and cover with soil for storage. The thickness of the covering soil should be between 15 and 20 centimeters, neither too thin nor too thick.

Long-term storage for winter

This preservation method has a rather cliché name: "men cellaring". This is a common method of preserving vegetables such as beets, which are primarily root vegetables. The preparation of the cellar should be started half a month before the formal cellaring. The specifications of the cellar are very particular. According to experience, the size of the cellar is about 5 meters long, about the length of an adult's step wide, and deep enough to cover an adult's head, but no more than two meters. In order to save land, about half a meter of soil should be reserved between each cellar.

Preparing the cellar half a month in advance is to allow enough time to dry it out and prevent the stored items from rotting. Before putting the beets in, you need to simply disinfect them and try to put them in on a sunny day.

3. There is another situation where you only buy the amount for a few meals at a time. In this case, just store it as a radish. Just wrap it in plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator and it will not spoil.
