How to grow orange trees to make them more vigorous?

Oranges are a fruit that many people like to eat. They have a history of thousands of years of cultivation in China and are widely distributed in production areas. If you plant oranges, how can you grow the orange trees to make them grow more vigorously? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Planting time

Due to the temperature difference between the north and the south, orange trees are generally planted in spring or autumn in the south, with February to March in spring and September to November in autumn being the most suitable periods. At this time, the temperature and humidity are suitable, and the survival rate after cultivation is high. Planting in the northern region requires cultivation at different times according to the local geographical location and climatic conditions.

2. Soil requirements

Orange trees have very high requirements for soil. The best terrain is a slope of 20-35 degrees. Yellow mud soil is the best and has extremely strong viscosity. It is not conducive to rapid water loss, which would cause malnutrition and serious damage to the orange tree. The depth of planting seedlings should be 30 cm, and the drainage ditches in the field must be well-made to avoid disasters in the rainy season that affect the growth of orange trees.

3. Proper land preparation

Deeply plow the soil 20~25cm to improve the physical and chemical properties of the soil. After tillage, sun-dry it in the sun, and then apply base fertilizer in layers. The base fertilizer should be mainly decomposed organic fertilizer and supplemented by chemical fertilizer. For every 0.067hm2 of orchard, 3000kg of decomposed organic fertilizer and 10kg of superphosphate can be applied. If necessary, an appropriate amount of wood ash can be applied to promote germination and accelerate rooting.

4. Planting spacing

It is best to plant 70 to 90 orange trees per acre. The row spacing and spacing can be controlled at 3 meters. This will not cause excessive planting density, make management easier in the future, reduce labor, and increase orange income.

5. Planting method

There are two methods for planting. The first is to dig holes for planting, with a depth of 80cm and a width of 80cm. First, spread 50cm of green manure at the bottom, and then backfill 40cm of soil for planting. The second is to build ridges for planting in the field, with 8m furrows and 2 ridges in each room. Planting requires two people to work closely together, put the seedlings in the center of the planting hole, stretch the roots, straighten them, then backfill while gently lifting the seedlings, and finally tamp them down to ensure that the roots of the seedlings are in full contact with the soil. Finally, water them with sufficient rooting water, make a 1m tree tray around the seedlings, and then cover them with bran or weeds to keep them moist.

6. Sapling pruning

During the seedling period, prune the branched branches and leaves and reserve the main trunk seedling, which will have strong nutrient absorption, increase the rapid growth rate of the seedling, enter the fruit-bearing period earlier, and reduce factors such as yellow leaves and diseases. During the growth period of seedlings, pruning is required several times a year. The branches and leaves with high density need to be cut off, and the density should be kept small and moderate to increase the fruit-bearing rate in the next year.

7. Fertilization management

Fertilization is carried out four times a year. According to the planting principles, phosphate fertilizer, urea and compound fertilizer are used for fertilization in the early spring every year. At this time, the flowering season has a great demand for nutrients. Fertilization before fruiting is the most important key. In the orange growing period from July to August, fertilizer is needed according to the size of the oranges. The usage and amount are similar to before, mainly to provide sufficient nutrition. November is the most vigorous growth season for oranges, and the nutritional needs are greater at this time. This time, a large amount of compound fertilizer must be used to meet the nutritional needs of oranges. It is particularly important to note that the fertilizer should be sprinkled 1 meter away from the tree roots.
