How to plant Gloxinia in water

Water plugging period

Water plugging is more suitable in May and June or August and September. If it is done in a greenhouse, water plugging can be done all year round.

Water plug container

You can use watertight, non-toxic and odorless plastic bottles or glass products. It is best to scald them with hot water before plugging them in for sterilization.

Selection of cuttings

After the tubers are planted, they will produce several young buds after a period of growth. When they grow to 2-3 pairs of leaves, leave 1-2 stems to bloom, and the remaining young stems can be broken off and the lower pair of leaves removed. There is no need to cut them and they can be used directly as cuttings.

You can also cut the strong young stems after the flowers have faded, with the top 5-8 cm long, and use sharp scissors to cut the lower part of the stem 3-5 mm away from the node, flat or slightly oblique, remove the lower leaves and use as cuttings.

Take the large and thick leaves that are not too old in the lower middle part of the plant, and carefully break them off from the base of the petiole to use as cuttings.

Steps of water plugging

Let ordinary tap water stand for 1 or 2 days, pour it into a container, and then insert the cuttings into the water with the leaves exposed outside the container and the petioles and lower rhizomes immersed in the water, about 1.5-2 cm.

If there are few cuttings and the container is too deep and large, you can use a foam sheet to dig out small holes, insert the lower part of the cuttings, and then float them on the water.

After water-plugging, place the container where it absorbs scattered sunlight, change the water every two or three days. White adventitious roots will grow in about ten days, and tubers will grow in about twenty days. After that, you can continue water-plugging or transplant.
