How to sow Milan and when is the best time to sow Milan

How to sow Milan and when is the best time to sow Milan

1. Sowing time

Milan is usually sown in autumn, when the climate is relatively warm and the light is not strong, making it easier for it to take root and sprout after sowing. In summer, because the light is too strong, the seedlings are easily sunburned after they grow out, so be sure to pay attention to shade. In addition, since the plant is not cold-resistant, the seeds will not take root and germinate if sown in winter.

2. Pot soil preparation

The soil for planting Milan should generally be loose and fertile, so as to ensure the growth of seeds. Usually humus soil is mixed with river sand. The proportion of river sand does not need to be too large, as it is mainly used to increase the drainage of the soil. In addition, since humus soil itself contains nutrients, there is no need for additional base fertilizer.

3. Seeding and Seedling Raising

Once the soil is prepared, you can start sowing. Usually the entire fruit should be buried in the soil, but not too deep, otherwise the germination rate will be reduced. After sowing, water thoroughly to keep the substrate moist. Usually, if sown in autumn, the seeds will grow in the second year. The plants in the seedling stage are shade-tolerant and can be appropriately shaded to avoid direct sunlight. When it grows to 20 cm in height, its top buds need to be cut off.

4. Subsequent maintenance

Mature Milan plants are not shade-tolerant, so they need to be provided with sufficient light and watered frequently to keep the soil in the pot moist but not damp. Since it can bloom many times a year, appropriate top dressing should be applied after each flowering to replenish its nutrients. During the growing period of the plant, it is also necessary to prune it appropriately, cut off the branches that are too long and too dense, and spray it with carbendazim to prevent infection of the wounds.
