How many days does it take for green onions to sprout?

Scallions are highly adaptable and can be planted almost all year round, but are best grown in spring and autumn. Spring sowing is generally in March and April, and autumn sowing is in September and October. Farmers who want to grow shallots must master the planting time. So how many days does it take for green onions to sprout? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. How many days does it take for green onions to sprout?

It usually takes 5-10 days for shallots to germinate from sowing. If the seeds are soaked before sowing, the germination time can be shortened and they will germinate in about 3-4 days. The specific time will be affected by factors such as temperature and soil moisture.

The suitable temperature for germination of shallot seeds is 15-25℃. Within this temperature range, seeds can absorb water and oxygen more quickly, and their metabolic activity is more vigorous, which is conducive to the germination and growth of the embryo. In an environment of around 20°C, shallot seeds may germinate in about 6-7 days.

When the temperature is below 10℃, the physiological activity of seeds is inhibited, the germination speed will be significantly slowed down, and it may take 10 days or even longer for seedlings to emerge. When the temperature is higher than 30℃, the seeds may enter a dormant state, resulting in a lower germination rate or even no germination.

2. Methods for germination of shallots

1. Seed selection

Select seeds with a purity of more than 99% and a germination rate of more than 90%, and make sure the seeds are new seeds within one year to ensure the germination ability and growth potential of the seeds.

2. Seed germination

Soak the shallot seeds in warm water at about 40°C for 2 hours, then take out and dry the seed skin. This method can soften the seed coat, promote seed water absorption, and increase the germination rate.

3. Sowing time

Scallions are resistant to both high and low temperatures and are evergreen all year round, but the most suitable growth temperature is 18℃-23℃. Therefore, sowing in a season with suitable temperature is conducive to seed germination and growth.

4. Sowing method

It can be sown in rows or broadcast. Sow the germinated seeds evenly in the soil and cover them lightly. The thickness of the soil is generally 0.5-1 cm. It should not be too thick to avoid affecting the germination of the seeds.

5. Soil selection

It is best to choose sandy loam that is loose, well-ventilated, fertile, and rich in organic matter. Such soil is conducive to seed breathing and root growth.

6. Fertilization management

Before sowing, you can pre-bury base fertilizer, such as slow-release fertilizer or organic manure, to provide sufficient nutrients for the growth of shallots. After the green onions grow true leaves, you can regularly water them with liquid nitrogen and potassium fertilizers to promote the growth and development of the plants.

The above is an introduction to how many days it takes for shallots to germinate. After sowing, the shallots should be kept at a suitable temperature to promote germination and growth of the seeds. If the temperature is too low or too high, it will affect the germination speed and germination rate of the seeds.
