The latest time to transplant onion seedlings

The latest time to transplant onion seedlings

Transplanting is a critical step in the onion planting process. The correct transplanting method can not only improve the yield and quality of onions, but also reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests. So when is the latest time to transplant onion seedlings ? Let’s learn more about it below.

The latest time to transplant onion seedlings

Transplanting onions should avoid excessively cold weather, but should not be done too early, so the latest time for transplanting is generally November at the end of autumn. This timing is to allow the onion seedlings to enter the winter in the best condition, avoiding the early spring phenomenon caused by early transplanting, and the frostbite caused by late transplanting, which will prevent them from safely overwintering.

How to transplant onion seedlings?

1. Soil selection

Onions are suitable for growing in loose, fertile and well-ventilated soil. Before transplanting, the soil should be deeply plowed, and 4-5 cubic meters of well-rotted farmyard manure, 30 kg of diammonium phosphate, and 50 kg of phosphate fertilizer should be applied as base fertilizer.

2. Treat the plants

Before transplanting, you should select healthy and pest-free onion seedlings, and remove weak and pest-infected seedlings.

3. Transplanting operation

Before transplanting, water the soil thoroughly to make it loose. Then use a shovel to carefully dig out the onion seedlings, trying to keep the roots intact. When transplanting, the seedlings should be vertical up and down, and not tilted left and right. The depth is generally controlled between 2 and 3 centimeters to ensure that the small bulbs can be buried.

4. Management after transplanting

(1) Water and fertilizer: Apply water to the plants within 3 to 5 days after transplanting to promote survival. At the same time, pay attention to the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, and avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer to prevent excessive growth of the aboveground parts.

(2) Keep warm: In winter, onions need to be provided with a warm living environment. The suitable temperature is 16℃-28℃. Keep warm in time to avoid frost damage.

(3) Intertillage: Generally, it should be carried out 3-4 times during the seedling stage, combined with each watering. Carry out tillage 2-3 times during the stem and leaf growth period, and stop tillage after the plants have formed ridges.

(4) Disease prevention: Regularly check the growth of onion seedlings to detect and deal with pests and diseases in a timely manner.

In general, the latest time for transplanting onion seedlings is usually around November each year. Be careful to do the transplanting work in time, not too early or too late. In addition, master the correct transplanting method to improve the survival rate of onion seedlings and lay a good foundation for subsequent yield increases.
