How to plant yam seeds?

Yam is rich in nutrients and is generally eaten as a tuber. It is a precious vegetable and can be used as medicine when dried. Yams are grown in all parts of China. In order to ensure their yield and variety, many farmers choose to plant them with yam seeds . So how to plant yam seeds ? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. Site selection and land preparation

When planting yam, you should choose deep and fertile sandy soil that is easy to irrigate and drain. Be sure to avoid saline and clay soil. The soil thickness must reach more than 120 centimeters, and there must be no clay and sand layers, otherwise it will affect the commercial quality of the yam. You can dig trenches in winter and spring, with a row spacing of about 80 cm, and adopt the method of three turnings and one loosening, that is, the first three shovels are to turn the soil, and the fourth shovel is only to loosen the soil without turning it. The depth of the trench should reach 110 cm.

2. Planting time

Yams are usually planted in spring. They can be sown when the local temperature rises above 10℃, from late February to early April.

3. Seed treatment

Generally, yam seeds need to be cut and selected about one month before the start of sowing. Generally, thinner yams are selected, and small segments of about 20 cm are cut from them. The upper and lower ends need to be marked in detail with a pen, dipped in lime and exposed to the sun, and generally the track is sufficient. However, during this process, you must pay attention to rain, moisture and wind protection so that the seeds can germinate well. When bagging and transporting to the planting site, you must also be gentle to avoid scratching or damaging the suede, which may affect its germination.

4. Planting method

After watering the previously turned land and the land with base fertilizer, spread the prepared seeds in the groove with a spacing of about 20 cm between each plant. Generally, about 4,000 yam plants can be planted per mu. Cover them with about 10 cm of soil, add some plastic film, and then wait for it to grow normally.

5. Build a scaffold and prune branches

Yam is a climbing plant, and its young stems are brittle and easily broken, so a trellis must be built when the seedlings are about 30 cm tall to promote healthy growth of the stems and vines. The height of the frame is 1.5-1.7 meters, and it is often constructed as an A-frame or tripod. When the seed block germinates, generally 1-2 main stems can be extended. After the seedlings emerge, the excess stems and vines should be removed, leaving only one thick main stem. Also, remove the side branches at the base. When a large number of remnants are formed, it will affect the growth of tubers, so remove some of them in time.

6. Fertilizer and water management

The root system of yam is shallow, so fertilizer should be applied to the upper layer of the tillage layer. Generally, 100 kg of cake fertilizer, 6,000 kg of ash fertilizer, and 500 kg of manure are applied per mu. Top dressing should be done 1-2 times during the growth period of stems and leaves, with decomposed human and animal manure and cake fertilizer. Base fertilizer and topdressing fertilizer must be fully decomposed organic fertilizer . No more fertilizer after September.

The above is an introduction to how to plant yam seeds. When using yam seeds for planting , you must process them in a timely manner to ensure their germination rate, increase the yield of yam, and do a good job of management after planting.
