When to plant winter radishes?

When to plant winter radishes?

Radish is a semi-hardy vegetable that prefers a mild and cool climate with large temperature differences. The suitable temperature for seed germination is 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. The seedling stage can withstand high temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius and short-term low temperatures of minus 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. The suitable temperature for leaf growth is 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, and the optimal ground temperature for fleshy root expansion is 13 to 18 degrees Celsius. The planting time for radishes varies depending on the region and climatic conditions. So when to plant winter radishes?

When to plant winter radishes?

The sowing period for winter radish is generally in early to mid-September. This period can avoid the scorching heat and the effects of frost, which is conducive to the growth of radishes.

Winter radish planting method

1. Variety selection

Choose winter radish varieties suitable for the local environment, such as early-maturing varieties such as " Yidianhong ", "Ningbo 60 Days", and "Xiaoshan Yidaozhong"; medium-maturing varieties such as "Taihu Late-maturing White Radish", "Nanjing Chuanxinhong" and "Hubei Huangzhou Radish"; and late-maturing varieties such as "Zhejiang University Long Radish", "Zheluo No. 1" and "Nanjing Jiangnong University Red Radish".

2. Soil screening

Choose sandy loam with deep soil, fertile and loose soil, and good drainage for planting, and avoid soil where the previous crop was cruciferous plants.

3.Stable temperature

The suitable temperature range for radish seeds to germinate is between 3 degrees and 22 degrees to ensure that the seeds take root and germinate normally.

4. Planting seeds

Direct seeding is generally adopted, with a sowing depth of 1-2 cm. One plant is planted every 10-15 cm, and the row spacing is 30-40 cm.

5. Field management

Thinning: Follow the principle of "early thinning, frequent thinning, and late finalization", and thin out the seedlings when there are 2 to 3, 4 to 5, and 6 to 7 true leaves respectively.

Water management: Keep the soil moist, especially during the germination period, when sufficient water is needed; water less during the seedling stage to promote the downward growth of fleshy roots; maintain sufficient water and fertilizer in the later stage.

Top dressing: Start top dressing after the seedlings are established, combine it with weeding and soil cultivation, and use deep immunization preparations for plant diseases and insect pests and then dilute with water for application.

Intertillage and weeding: Intertillage should be carried out once from the seedling stage to before row closing to keep the soil loose, and combined with weeding, and root protection and soil cultivation in the later stage.

The above is an overview of the planting time and methods of winter radishes. Pay attention to the prevention and control of pests such as the yellow striped flea beetle, and aphids in the middle and late stages. I hope it will be helpful for planting.
