Plum blossom pruning method

Plum blossom pruning method

1. Shortening branches

When the tree is young, some of the annual branches need to be cut off. This can stimulate the growth of side buds, make the plant fuller and more lush, and accumulate nutrients to promote early flowering.

2. Remove the terminal bud

It has a strong germination ability and grows relatively fast. After growing for a period of time, it will sprout many buds and become messy. Especially during the growing season, it is necessary to remove the buds in time to avoid the branches that grow later becoming messy and numerous, consuming more nutrients and affecting subsequent growth.

3. Thinning branches

The best time to prune is 1-2 weeks after the flowers have faded. This period is perfect for thinning branches and has little impact on overall growth. If you find any yellowed branches or branches infested with diseases and insect pests, you need to cut them off immediately. In addition, removing some of the dense branches, crossed branches, and overlapping branches can reduce nutrient consumption and improve light transmittance so that the tree can receive light evenly.

4. Modeling and pruning

This applies to potted plants. If you grow them at home, you also need to prune them according to the shape. Remove weak branches from the base, as leaving them will affect the overall shape. Remember to have the structure in mind before pruning.
