When is the best season to transplant chives?

For leek growers, choosing the right transplanting season is a very important part. Because timely transplanting can make the space between leek plants be reasonably distributed, it is beneficial to improve ventilation and light conditions, reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests, and thus increase the yield and quality of leek. So when is the best season to transplant leeks? Let’s learn more about it below.

When is the best season to transplant chives?

The transplanting season of leek mainly depends on the local climatic conditions and the habits of the leek variety, but generally it is more suitable for transplanting in spring and autumn. Among them, spring generally takes place between March and May, and autumn takes place from September to November. The climatic conditions in these two time periods are very suitable for the growth of leeks.

How to transplant chives correctly?

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Choose soil with a deep soil layer, high organic matter content, and convenient drainage and irrigation. Leeks should not be planted in the same crop as the previous one, and should be avoided in areas where onions and garlic crops have been planted previously. When preparing the land, apply 3,000 kg of fully decomposed organic fertilizer and 40 kg of triple compound fertilizer as base fertilizer per mu.

2. Remove the seedlings

Be careful when transplanting seedlings to minimize damage to the root system. You can use a shovel or other tools to dig out the leek seedlings with the soil to keep the root system intact. If the roots are too long, you can trim them appropriately, but keep enough root length, generally about 5 to 10 cm is appropriate.

3. Planting

Planting is carried out according to a certain row spacing and plant spacing, the row spacing is generally 20-30 cm, and the plant spacing is about 10-15 cm. Place the leek seedlings vertically in the planting trench, then fill and compact the soil. When filling the soil, be careful not to bury the heart leaves of the leek. The heart leaves should be exposed 2-3 cm above the ground.

4. Management after transplanting

(1) Watering: After transplanting the leek, water it promptly and sufficiently to ensure that the soil is closely integrated with the root system, and keep the soil moist but avoid water accumulation. Generally, water it once every 3-5 days until the leek seedlings begin to grow new leaves.

(2) Fertilization: After the seedlings have grown, a proper amount of quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer (such as urea) can be applied. In the subsequent growth cycle, organic fertilizer , compound fertilizer and other fertilizers can be applied as needed.

(3) Weeding: Remove weeds in the field in a timely manner to avoid competing with leeks for nutrients, water and light. Manual or chemical weeding methods can be used. For chemical weeding, herbicides that are safe for leeks must be selected and operated strictly.

In general, the transplanting time of leeks can be determined according to local climatic conditions and the growth conditions of leeks to ensure that the transplanted leeks can quickly adapt to the new environment. At the same time, good management before and after transplanting can effectively improve the survival rate of leeks and promote the healthy growth of leeks.
