Bougainvillea grafting method

Bougainvillea grafting method

Bougainvillea grafting is suitable for Bougainvillea varieties that grow relatively slowly. Grafting the slow quality onto varieties with good growth and resistance can speed up the slow growth rate and enhance various resistances. Therefore, grafting is an important means of propagating Bougainvillea.

Bougainvillea grafting time

Bougainvillea is suitable for grafting in spring from March to April and autumn from September to October. These two seasons are the growing seasons of Bougainvillea. Grafting Bougainvillea in these two seasons is conducive to its survival. Water the Bougainvillea once before grafting, and healing tissue can grow after the temperature rises.

Bougainvillea grafting technology

The methods of grafting Bougainvillea include cleft grafting, approach grafting, and bud grafting. The rootstock can be a Bougainvillea branch with thicker branches. Such Bougainvillea has a stronger root system, vigorous growth, and a high survival rate.

1. Cleft grafting

Bougainvillea can be grafted using the cleft grafting method. Keep three or four buds on the branches as scions. Choose one-year-old purple-flowered Bougainvillea as the rootstock, connect two scions, tie the joints with plastic tape, and maintain in a cool place for one month.

2. Skin grafting

Make an oblique cut on the back of the bud of the scion, make a horizontal cut at the bottom of the bud, remove the cortex, insert the cutting into the rootstock, wrap the interface to prevent air and moisture from entering, and it will survive after one month of maintenance.

3. Abdominal grafting

Cut a V-shaped incision on the rootstock, and cut the lower end of the cutting into an inverted V shape. The interface of the cutting should be aligned with the incision of the rootstock. Graft the two together and tie them with plastic film to avoid sun exposure. It will take one month to survive.
