How long does it take for calla lily to bloom?

Calla lily flowers look like horseshoes, so they are called calla lilies. Calla lilies are generally propagated by bulbs. After the flowering period is over, the whole plant is dug out and the side bulbs that grow are preserved. They can be planted in autumn.

Usually, the flowering period of Calla Lily can last about 6 months. If properly maintained, its flowers can bloom from November to around May of the following year. February to March each year is its peak flowering period.

It takes 3-4 years for Calla lily seedlings to bloom. If they are divided, they will bloom in about 3 months after being potted . The flowering period is from winter to May-June of the following year.

How to plant Calla Lily and make it grow well

Calla lily is a bulbous flower, which is propagated by bulbs. The sowing season is generally in August-September in autumn. The bulbs can be purchased directly or propagated by yourself. After the Calla lily blooms, the side bulbs can be dug out and preserved.

Planting Calla Lily is very simple. Place the tuber with the sprouting part facing upwards, then cover the surface of the pot with 3-4 cm of soil. After covering the soil, water it thoroughly. Generally, leaves will grow in about two weeks.

When caring for Calla lilies at home, most people plant them in pots. When planting Calla lilies in pots, you need to pay attention to the soil, light, watering, fertilization, etc., which are explained below one by one.

1. Suitable for loose, breathable, humus-rich soil

When planting calla lilies, soil is a very critical factor, which is related to the subsequent growth.

Calla lily is suitable for loose, fertile and humus-rich soil. Such soil has certain air permeability and drainage, and contains sufficient nutrients, which is very suitable for the growth of Calla lily.

There are many options for soil preparation, and here are some commonly used options.

Preparation method 1

Mix garden soil and coconut coir in a ratio of 2:1, and add a small amount of bone meal or organic fertilizer.

Preparation method 2

Mix pond mud and leaf mold in a ratio of 2:1, and then add a small amount of organic fertilizer.

2. Shade-tolerant, no direct sunlight

Calla lily is a shade-bearing flower, and it does not require much light. It can generally be maintained in a shaded place indoors or outdoors. But after all, it is a flowering plant, so it still needs some light. For indoor maintenance, it should be placed in a place with sufficient light.

Calla lilies are not sun-resistant and cannot be exposed to the sun in summer. After being brought indoors in winter, they can be exposed to more sunlight to facilitate flowering.

3. Likes a humid environment, water more often

Calla lilies like moisture, so you can water them more often. Even a small amount of accumulated water will have no effect on them.

Watering is usually done to keep the soil moist and avoid drought. Watering can be done every 2-3 days in spring and autumn, and every day in summer. To ensure air humidity, spray water on the leaves every day.

4. Fertilize frequently with thin fertilizers. Applying phosphorus fertilizer before flowering can promote flowering.

Calla lily is suitable for a program of applying small amounts of fertilizer multiple times. During the growing period, generally apply decomposed cake fertilizer water once every 10 days or so, and the cake fertilizer water should be diluted about 10 times.

Then before the flowering period, that is, after February, you can switch to fertilizers with higher phosphorus content such as chicken manure and pigeon manure, which can promote the flowering of Calla lily and make the flowers more colorful.
