Can Ginkgo trees be propagated by cuttings?

Ginkgo can be propagated by cuttings. It can be propagated in spring and autumn, but it is best to do it in March or April, when the climate is warm and suitable, and the cuttings are more likely to take root and survive. You need to select healthy branches from the ginkgo plant, insert them into a clean substrate, and wait for them to take root before planting.

Ginkgo tree cutting steps

Prepare the substrate: Ginkgo can easily survive in moist and breathable sandy soil, sandy soil, and river sand. You can choose river sand, vermiculite, and perlite, mix them evenly in a ratio of 6:2:2, and use them as the cutting substrate.

Select cuttings: Choose high-quality branches that are disease-free for 1-2 years, cut 15-20cm as cuttings with sterilized scissors, cut off some leaves, keep 2-3 tender leaves on the top, and cut the bottom into an oblique surface. After cutting, wash with clean water, soak in rooting water for about 60 minutes, take out and dry, and wait for cuttings.

Cuttings: prepare a clay pot, fill it with the prepared soil, about 60%-80%, don't fill it too full, smooth the soil, insert the ginkgo cuttings into the substrate, water until the soil is moist, keep it in a cool and ventilated place, and wait for rooting.

Maintenance and management methods of ginkgo trees after cuttings

Shade: Black shade nets or artificial sheds can be used for shade. If conditions permit, plastic greenhouses can be used to maintain a cool and humid microclimate in the nursery.

Watering: For open-field cuttings, in addition to watering immediately after cuttings, spray water once in the morning and evening on sunny days. After one month, gradually reduce the number and amount of watering.

Top dressing: After the cuttings take root in May-June, spray 0.1% urea and 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution on the leaves 1-2 times a month.

Transplanting: The fallen leaves from field cuttings should be transplanted directly before germination in the second year; greenhouse cuttings should be refined before transplanting.
