How to save seeds of buckwheat

Buckwheat Seed Introduction

Buckwheat heads have seeds and are usually propagated by bulbs. In early summer, they will sprout vines and bloom. The terminal umbels are purple in color with stamens and pistils, but they are not easy to produce seeds.

How to save seeds of buckwheat

The seeds of buckwheat are mainly hidden in its flower buds. Buckwheat will bloom in early summer, but it is not easy to produce seeds. If you find that the cultivated buckwheat has seeds, you can collect them directly.

If you want to keep the young leaves and bulbs for food, they can be harvested and put on the market from January to April of the second year of planting. If you want to mainly harvest the young stems, you can harvest the seeds in May when the leaves start to turn yellow.

Buckwheat seed propagation

Buckwheat seeds can be planted. Buckwheat seeds are now sold on the market. In the Jiangnan region, they are generally sown from mid-August to early September. Do not sow too early. If sown too early, the ground temperature will be high, the rainfall will be heavy, and the seeds will easily rot. If sown too late, the growing period will be short and the yield will be reduced.

Buckwheat seed planting method

1. Buckwheat heads are mostly propagated by bulbs. Before sowing, select bulbs with neat shapes and large size as seeds.
2. Dig furrows on the high ridges with a row spacing of 25 cm and a depth of 8 to 10 cm. When planting, if one seed is planted in each hole, the hole spacing should be 7 to 8 cm; if 2 to 3 seeds are planted in each hole, it is better to slightly expose the top of the stalk.

3. After sowing, pay attention to watering and keep the soil moist. It will germinate and emerge from the soil in about 7 to 10 days.
