Cultivation method of Schefflera chinensis

Schefflera prefers warm, humid, semi-sunny environment. The suitable growth temperature is between 16 and 27 degrees Celsius. It is resistant to high temperatures and can still grow normally under high temperature conditions above 30 degrees. It is not resistant to low temperatures. The winter temperature must not be lower than 5 degrees. The plant will be frostbitten if it is kept at 0 degrees for a long time.

Schefflera has a wide adaptability to light and can grow in semi-shade, semi-sun and full-sun conditions, but it is best kept in a bright, diffuse light place. The leaves are dark green, and the soil should be fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam. If it is potted, you can use a mixture of peat soil, leaf mold and coarse sand.

Watering method

Schefflera can be watered every 2-3 days in spring and autumn. In summer, when the temperature is high, it can be watered once a day to keep the soil moist. When the air is dry, it should be sprayed with water in time, and the leaves can also be sprayed with water. Control watering during the low temperatures in winter.

Fertilization method

Schefflera grows vigorously from March to September. Some compound fertilizer or cake fertilizer water can be applied at intervals of 15-20 days. Not too much nitrogen fertilizer should be applied to variegated varieties, otherwise the leaves will turn green and lose the original characteristics of the variety. The application of nitrogen fertilizer should also be controlled for variegated varieties to prevent the color of the patches from fading or disappearing.

Pruning methods

For the overgrown branches of Schefflera, they need to be pruned back to promote the growth of side branches and maintain a good tree shape. Afterwards, the diseased, old, dead and weak branches can be pruned to reduce nutrient loss. The rotten roots can be pruned when repotting.

Precautions for breeding Schefflera

Schefflera needs to be placed in the shade in summer to prevent exposure to the sun and provide a semi-shaded environment. The light intensity is low in winter and no shading is needed. It can grow well with more than 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. The light of variegated leaf varieties should not be too strong or too weak, otherwise it will reduce its ornamental value.
