How to propagate Podocarpus and what to pay attention to

Podocarpus reproduction method

Podocarpus can be propagated by sowing or by cuttings. Its seeds can be propagated, and its natural reproduction method is also seed propagation. Generally speaking, Podocarpus is propagated fastest by cuttings.

Podocarpus breeding time

It is generally better to choose March to April for Podocarpus to reproduce in spring every year. This period is the period of vigorous growth of the plant. Usually the survival rate of reproduction is relatively high, and the growth is relatively rapid.

Podocarpus propagation method

Podocarpus cutting propagation

Cutting propagation should be carried out after the solar term of Beginning of Autumn. Cut 3-year-old strong branches, about 15-18 cm long, cut off the lower leaves from the petiole of the branches, and then soak the branches in warm water at 30-32℃ for one hour, then soak them in 5% white sugar water for 24 hours, and insert them into the prepared soft loam.

Sowing propagation of Podocarpus

Choose large, ripe Podocarpus seeds, dig holes in the soil, sow 2 seeds in each hole, cover with 1-2 cm of fine soil after sowing, then gently compact the sowing area, cover the surface with a layer of straw, water thoroughly, and then water every 3-5 days. It will generally germinate in 3-5 weeks.

Matters Needing Attention in Breeding Podocarpus

When propagating Podocarpus, you need to pay attention to the fact that the temperature between 15-25℃ is most suitable for plant growth. When watering, make sure the soil in the pot is dry before watering thoroughly. The temperature is high in summer, so you need to water more. Place the plant in the sun every morning and evening to receive sufficient light.
