How to propagate agave and what to pay attention to

How to reproduce agave

Agave is commonly propagated by division, cuttings and sowing. It can be propagated by sowing if it has seeds. Generally speaking, cuttings are the fastest way to propagate Agave.

Agave breeding time

If agave is to be propagated by seeds, it is generally more appropriate to choose April to May in spring. The climate during this period is more suitable and the survival rate of reproduction is high.

Agave propagation method

Agave division propagation

Take out the seedlings that sprout from the base of the old agave plant. If the seedlings have roots, they can be planted directly. If the seedlings do not have roots, they need to be inserted into the sand bed first, and then planted in pots after they take root.

Agave cutting propagation

Prepare a culture soil with good drainage and air permeability, remove the young shoots growing from the axils of the agave leaves, dry them in the sun for 5-7 days, and then insert them directly into the culture soil after the wounds are dry.

Agave seed propagation

Generally, sowing and propagation are carried out in spring. Prepare healthy and plump agave seeds and suitable planting soil. Put the soil into the flowerpot, then sow the seeds on the surface of the potting soil, cover with a thin layer of soil, and pay attention to heat preservation and moisture retention.

Things to note when breeding agave

When propagating agave by sowing, the temperature needs to be controlled. Generally speaking, the best temperature for seed germination is above 15°C at night and around 30°C during the day. If the temperature cannot be guaranteed to be suitable, the germination rate of the seeds will be greatly reduced, or even fail to germinate. After sowing, you must pay attention to keeping warm and moisturizing.
