How to prune the Chinese photinia bonsai

How to prune the Chinese photinia bonsai

1. Pruning methods for potted plants that have been cultivated for many years

If it is a potted plant that has been planted for many years, especially when it is old, in order to prevent its branches and flowers from withering or falling off, you should turn the soil every two to three years, preferably in February or March each year, to remove the old roots and branches. Its branches, buds and roots have particularly strong growth capabilities. The more the branches are pruned, the more vigorous they will grow.

2. New pile head pruning method

If it is a newly dug stump, its planting season is from the end of each year to March of the following year. If the branches grow to ten to twenty centimeters, you can remove the unnecessary branches, and the remaining branches also need to be appropriately shortened. This can reduce water consumption and its nutrients can be concentrated on the stump.

3. Pruning methods for branches with wounds

If a branch has wounds due to various reasons, you should not remove the buds or cut the branches too early. Instead, you should allow it to grow freely. This will help the wounds heal and repair naturally. Only then can you cut the branches.

IV. Precautions

1. Prune it at the right time, preferably in late spring or early autumn. During these two seasons, its stump has the strongest germination ability and grows most vigorously. Its wildly growing branches, messy branches, or diseased branches should be removed at any time. It should be noted that when the weather is hot, it is easier to burn its newly grown buds, causing its leaves to curl up, so after pruning, it is best to place it in a cool area to allow its buds to grow normally before seeing the light.

2. You can prune it once in the autumn every year, remove some too dense branches and leaves, and remove all kinds of messy branches and wildly growing branches. This can allow it to maintain a certain posture and help its branches and leaves become denser. It has a strong ability to sprout, so it should be topped off in time.
