Calamus maintenance methods and precautions

Soil for growing calamus

Acorus likes water, and loose, breathable sandy loam is suitable for its growth. Vermiculite, river sand and nutrient soil can be mixed in a ratio of 1 : 1: 1. Some bean cake fertilizer can be mixed into the soil as base fertilizer, which is both breathable and can supply sufficient nutrients. Loam rich in humus is preferred for cultivation.

Fertilization of calamus

Acorus has strong adaptability during the growing season and only requires extensive management. Acorus likes nitrogen fertilizer, and it is best to fertilize with decomposed bean cake water to avoid burning the seedlings. Nitrogen fertilizer can promote its growth. In the later stage, topdressing is needed 2-3 times, and combined with fertilization and weeding. In the early growth stage of calamus, nitrogen fertilizer should be used as the main fertilizer, and phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer should be added before heading and flowering to enhance the immunity of calamus. Note that each time you apply fertilizer, you must bury it about 5 cm below the soil surface, and be careful not to put it too close to the roots to avoid burning the roots. Before wintering, the dead branches and leaves on the ground should be cleared and pathogens and insects of diseases and insect pests should be removed.

Water management for calamus

Acorus likes a humid environment and avoids drought. Daily watering is advisable to keep the soil in the pot moist. During the growing period, the water level should be maintained to prevent drying out and causing the leaves to wither. Pay attention to keeping the environment moist. If necessary, you can spray water on the leaves to retain moisture. However, excessive watering can easily cause the leaves to turn yellow.

Illumination of calamus

Acorus likes shade and should avoid direct sunlight in summer. You can shade the plant. For potted plants, you can move them indoors to a place with scattered light. In other seasons, you can place them outdoors by the water or in the shade of a big tree in a slightly shaded place. For the division and pruning of calamus, dig out the underground rhizomes around the Qingming Festival or during the growing season, remove the old roots and dead leaves, and then cut the underground rhizomes into several pieces with a sharp knife, retaining 3-4 new buds in each piece for reproduction.
