How to propagate wintersweet

How to propagate wintersweet

Grafting propagation of Chimonanthus praecox

The most commonly used method of propagation of wintersweet is grafting, and grafting is mainly based on cutting grafting.

First, choose the time for grafting. The most appropriate time is between March and April in spring. Choose leaf buds the size of wheat grains for grafting.

Secondly, cut the leaf buds into scions of about 6 cm, and then prepare 5-year-old wax plum seedlings as rootstocks. The incision of the rootstock should be slightly longer. Join the scion and the rootstock, and then apply mud. Cover the treated joined plants with soil. After a month, you can dig up the soil and cultivate the surviving ones.

The grafted seedlings cultivated at the end should be topped off in time to promote the growth and germination of the seedlings. Then choose to cultivate the main trunk, and choose to cultivate the new shoots that grow after the rootstock and scion grow firmly in the second year.

Propagation of Chimonanthus praecox by division

The division propagation of wintersweet is carried out when the leaf buds just emerge.

First, cut the branches of the wintersweet to divide the plant. Then, in order to propagate it by division, dig around the soil where the mother plant grows and take out the soil.

Secondly, use a knife to split the stems, keeping about 3 stems for each plant, and then transplant the split stems into another planting pot with fertile soil.

Finally, the planted divisions need to be cultivated for about 3 years before being divided again. By repeating this cycle, you can reproduce a lot of wintersweets.

Seed propagation of wintersweet

The sowing propagation of wintersweet should be carried out in July and August.

The first step is to take the fruits that have turned yellow, remove the seeds, dry them, and wait until the next year to sow them.

Secondly, the method of sowing: when sowing, the dried seeds should be soaked in 60-degree boiling water for about a day, then take out the seeds and bury them in the soil about 5 cm deep.

Finally, maintenance, weeding, watering, and fertilizing are required. Fertilization should be applied once every half a month. Also pay attention to drainage and avoid water accumulation.
