Grafting method of red peony

Grafting method of red peony

Preparation for grafting of red peony

Choose the rootstock onto which the red peony will be grafted. The ball of the red peony lacks chlorophyll and cannot carry out photosynthesis to produce nutrients. Therefore, when propagating it, you can choose the grafting method and rely on the rootstock to provide nutrients. When choosing a rootstock for grafting the red peony, it is generally necessary to select a variety that is more than one year old and has a well-developed and strong root system. Commonly used rootstocks include plants such as the octagonal vine, the triangular arrow, and the dragon bone.

Tools to use when preparing for grafting. Mainly knives and tools for fixing joints. You can choose a small string or rubber band to fix the grafting of the red peony.

The grafting process of red peony

Select suitable rootstock and process it. Choose a suitable place on the rootstock, use a knife to flatten it so that the pith of the rootstock is exposed and process the surrounding area of the rootstock. The wound surface must be cleaned, otherwise it will be difficult to survive.

Processing the red peony for grafting. When handling the scarlet peony, you should pay attention to the size of the scarlet peony and decide how much to cut off, generally not more than half of the sphere.

The red peony is grafted and fixed. Align the center of the grafted graft with the center of the rootstock, and press with your fingers for about one minute to make the rootstock and graft fit together. Then fix it with a thin wire or rubber band. Pay attention to the tightness when fixing it, so that there is no gap between the scion and the rootstock. Being too loose or too tight will affect its survival.

Waiting to survive. About 15 days after the red peony was grafted, the grafted ball still remained fresh, indicating that the red peony had been grafted alive. If cracks appear on the interface or it turns black, it means the grafting has failed and you can re-graft it.

Precautions for grafting red peony

Peony grafting can be carried out in the greenhouse all year round, but the success rate is highest in late spring and early summer.

After grafting, place the red peony in a semi-shaded place, stop watering, and do not spray water on the ball.

When grafting, be careful to fix the grafted red peony to avoid affecting its survival.
