Key points of high-yield cultivation technology of sweet potato

Sweet potato , also known as yam or sweet potato, has different names in different regions. As a food crop with a long history, sweet potato is deeply loved by people and is grown all over China. Although the cultivation and management process of sweet potatoes is relatively simple and not as cumbersome as vegetable cultivation, it is important to learn the key points of high-yield sweet potato cultivation techniques in order to achieve high yields.

1. Ridge and fertilization

Sweet potatoes grow best in sandy loam with sufficient fertilizer and water. After land preparation, ridge planting will help the tubers expand and drain. Sweet potatoes require elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, especially more nitrogen in the early stages of growth, and more potassium in the middle and late stages. When applying base fertilizer, 5,000 kilograms of farmyard manure can be applied per mu, along with a bag of compound fertilizer .

2. Planting techniques

The planting of spring sweet potatoes should be carried out after the ground temperature has stably exceeded 15°C, and can be planted flat or obliquely. Flat planting is suitable for plots with good soil and water and fertilizer conditions, while oblique planting is suitable for plots with drought and moderate water and fertilizer conditions. To prevent underground pests, dip the roots before planting the seedlings, using insecticides such as chlorpyrifos suspension or imidacloprid.

3. Water and fertilizer management

Seedling stage: 10 to 15 days after planting, weeding and seedling replacement should be carried out, and 3 to 5 kilograms of urea per mu should be applied as topdressing.

Vine extension period: When the vines begin to extend and before ridge closing, control the use of nitrogen fertilizer and apply urea and potassium sulfate per acre.

During the potato growing period: focus on supplementing potassium fertilizer to promote potato enlargement and increase yield and quality.

4. Measures to control the growth

When excessive water and fertilizer cause the stems and leaves to grow too vigorously, measures to control growth need to be taken, such as lifting the vines, turning the vines, pinching or using chemical methods to control growth. Chemical growth control is more efficient. You can use growth control agents such as chlormequat, chlormequat chloride, and paclobutrazol, and spray them in appropriate amounts in several times to avoid overdose. Controlling growth helps to concentrate nutrients on the tubers and promote their growth.

In short, if you want to achieve high yields in sweet potato planting, every link needs to be controlled well. Through these fine planting and management methods, the yield and quality of sweet potatoes can be effectively improved.
