Growth habit

Opuntia is a genus of Opuntia in the Cactaceae family. It is a small cactus variety and is native to Mexico and the southern United States. It likes a sunny and dry growing environment, likes large temperature differences, and is resistant to drought and semi-shade.

Maintenance Tips

Temperature and light

When the temperature is below 7℃ in winter, you need to keep warm and move the star bag indoors. The star-shaped flower needs plenty of sunlight, but it also needs to be protected from the sun in midsummer and should not be exposed to the sun for long periods of time.

Watering

Star hopper is drought-resistant and prefers a dry growing environment. Follow the principle of "watering less but watering thoroughly". Water the plant sufficiently during its growing period, and be careful to avoid water accumulation in the pot. Keep the soil in the pot dry in winter, and then slowly resume normal watering after the temperature rises.

soil

It is suitable to choose sandy soil with good drainage, certain ventilation and rich in lime for planting.

Repotting

Adult plants should be repotted every 5-6 years.

Reproduction method

Seeding method

The most common way to propagate the star is by sowing. In spring, if you sow the seeds in pots indoors, they will germinate after about 3-5 days. It takes about 3-4 years from sowing to flowering, and they may bloom when the diameter is about 5 cm.

Grafting

Grafting is usually carried out in May and June. The rootstock or flower bulb is often used, and the seedlings are used for scion. It will bloom around the second year after grafting.
