How to grow leeks on the balcony

How to grow leeks on the balcony

1. Planting

Usually, there are two ways to grow leeks: old roots and sowing. It is not easy to find old roots in the city, so you can just sow them directly.

Chives are sown in early March of the lunar calendar and transplanted before August Festival. When transplanting, make sure the base fertilizer is sufficient and the soil is loose. The first crop of leeks that grow are thin and long, which are pleasing to the eye, and you can also taste the fragrant leeks.

2. Planting

One year after sowing, the chives can be moved into pots, with 3 to 5 plants in each clump, keeping a distance from each other. Cover the soil with 5 cm, then water it. Observe the dryness and wetness of the soil in the next few days. If the soil is dry, water it appropriately (don't water too much, otherwise the roots will rot easily).

3. Fertilization

Chives are fertilizer-loving plants. When the plant grows to 15 cm, appropriate amount of organic fertilizer should be applied. Chives like chicken and duck manure, human and animal manure, and grass ash the most, but these are rarely found in cities. Here is a simple way to make fertilizer:

Burn waste paper at home, branches outdoors, and peanut shells in an iron basin, and what remains after burning is grass lime. As for other fertilizers, such as urine, flower lovers can consider them on their own, haha!

4. Harvest

Chives are renewed every 15 days and can be harvested about 20 times a year. Leeks should be cut in the early morning or evening, using a sharp knife to cut them flatly.

Chives are drought-tolerant, so water them in the morning when the weather is dry. Chives grow rapidly and have a strong ability to branch. A newly planted leek can grow 30 to 40 chives. When the density is too high, they must be divided and transplanted in time.
