The correct way to grow succulents in winter

As winter approaches and temperatures drop, many plants need to take steps to resist the cold and go dormant. Although many people believe that succulents are more cold-resistant, in fact, in the low temperature environment in winter, succulents also need proper warming measures. Let’s learn the correct way to grow succulents in winter.

1. Water moderately to avoid excessive soil moisture

Succulents usually have thick leaves and fleshy stems that can store a lot of water and are highly drought-resistant, but they are sensitive to too much water. If the soil remains moist for a long time, it is easy to cause root rot, especially in summer, some succulents that are not resistant to high temperatures will enter a dormant state, and excessive watering at this time may cause root rot.

During the peak growth period in spring and autumn, in order to allow succulents to grow quickly, the soil can be kept slightly moist. Once the soil is dry, water should be added in time to promote plant growth.

After entering winter, due to the lower ambient temperature, the growth activity of succulents slows down and the demand for water decreases. When nighttime temperatures are low, overwatering may result in frost damage. Therefore, watering should be reduced in winter, and watering should be done appropriately after the soil is completely dry to keep the soil from being too moist.

2. Apply fertilizer in moderation and reduce fertilizer application in winter

Succulent plants should not be fertilized with concentrated fertilizers. During the growth period, you can regularly apply dilute fertilizer to promote growth.

There are two seasons when succulents should not be fertilized: during the high temperatures in summer, because most plants are in a dormant state, not only can the fertilizer not be absorbed, but it may also burn the roots and cause rot; fertilization should also be reduced in winter, unless the indoor temperature is suitable and does not affect the growth of the plants, then a moderate amount of dilute fertilizer solution can be applied. In an environment with lower temperatures, fertilization should be avoided to avoid fertilizer damage.

Autumn is a good time to apply fertilizer. Applying compound fertilizer rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium once every half a month or so will help the plants grow strong and enhance their resistance to cold. Stop fertilizing in winter and replenish nutrients until the plants resume growth in spring.

3. Plenty of sunlight to enhance viewing experience

Although succulents cannot tolerate strong direct light, they love sunlight. If there is a lack of light for a long time, the plant will easily grow too tall, the stems and leaves will be thin and long, and the plant shape will be scattered, affecting the ornamental effect.

The light is strong in the summer and most succulents are in a dormant period. They should be avoided from direct exposure to avoid problems. During the peak growing seasons in spring and autumn, more sunlight helps the plants grow full and evenly.

In addition to keeping warm in winter, succulents should also be placed in a sunny place. More sunlight will not only help them survive the winter, but also make the leaves more colorful and improve their ornamental value.

The above is an introduction to the key points of growing succulents in winter. As long as you maintain sufficient light in winter, succulents can still maintain their beautiful appearance.
