How to prune chestnut trees

When to prune chestnut trees

Chestnut trees can be pruned all year round, and the pruned branches can be propagated by cuttings, but special technical measures are required, which have a high technological content and are not easy for ordinary farmers to do.

How to prune chestnut trees

To promote branching of chestnut trees, you can prune the three dominant branches on the first layer of the plant during winter pruning, shorten the extended branches during winter pruning the following year, and select two dominant branches on the second layer as the main branches.

In the winter of the third year, the chestnut tree needs to be pruned and shaped. The main branches need to be shortened, mainly to thin out the competing branches and remove the thin and weak branches. If the angle of the main branch is unreasonable, the pulling method should be used to adjust the angle.

Chestnut tree pruning precautions

1. Chestnut trees are mainly pruned in winter. Nutrients are transported and stored by leaves, branches and roots during the dormant period of the tree. After spring, the tree sap begins to flow, and the nutrients stored in the rhizomes are transported in the opposite direction to the branches. Therefore, pruning too early or too late is not suitable.

2. Pruning chestnut trees in winter can improve ventilation and light transmission conditions, thereby enhancing photosynthetic intensity, facilitating the accumulation of photosynthetic products and further enriching the male flower primordium in the buds, laying a good foundation for the differentiation of female flowers in the budding period and increasing the number of female flowers.
