What are the cultivation methods and precautions of osmanthus

Osmanthus Introduction

Sweet osmanthus is a plant of the Oleaceae family. Its leaves are opposite, mostly oval or oblong, with serrated edges, and its flowers are clustered in the leaf axils.

Osmanthus mainly blooms in autumn. It comes in colors such as milky white, yellow, and orange-red. It is very fragrant and has purple-black drupes. It is native to the Himalayas in southwestern China and is also distributed in India, Nepal, and Cambodia.

Osmanthus cultivation method

Osmanthus prefers a warm and sunny environment. Young trees need a certain amount of shade, and sufficient light needs to be provided after they become adults so that the plants can thrive. They are resistant to high temperatures but not very cold-resistant. Warmth-keeping measures need to be taken in winter. They are suitable for planting in deep, well-drained, fertile, humus-rich, slightly acidic sandy loam. They are not resistant to drought and barrenness.

Watering method

Osmanthus likes a humid environment and needs to keep the soil moist. It is not drought-resistant or waterlogged. Watering should be moderate and the potting soil should not be too moist. In addition, watering depends on the temperature of the planting site. If the temperature is low, water less and if the temperature is high, water more.

Fertilization method

Osmanthus is generally fertilized with dilute nitrogen fertilizer once every half a month in spring, and phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are added in summer to make the flowers flourish and the leaves lush. Organic fertilizer is applied once before winter. Do not use concentrated fertilizer or raw fertilizer.

Pruning methods

The pruning of osmanthus needs to be carried out according to the posture of the plant, mainly pruning overlapping branches, crossed branches, overgrown branches, horizontal branches, sick and weak branches, old branches and dead branches, etc., to allow ventilation and light to pass through. If the upper part of the plant grows vigorously and the lower part grows poorly, the upper branches can be shortened by one third to make the overall tree strong.

Precautions for Osmanthus cultivation

The maintenance environment of osmanthus should be clean and tidy. During the growth period, the soil should be loosened and weeds should be removed to prevent soil compaction. Newly planted osmanthus must be watered thoroughly and sprayed with water appropriately to keep it moist. However, it is not resistant to waterlogging. Drainage measures need to be taken during the rainy season. Fertilization should be based on the principle of thin fertilizer and frequent application, with quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer as the main application.
