How to propagate Gardenia

The main ways to propagate gardenia are cuttings, layering and sowing. Its seeds can be propagated, and its natural way of reproduction is seed propagation. Generally speaking, cuttings are the fastest way to propagate.

Gardenia breeding time

It is generally better to propagate gardenia in summer and autumn. These two seasons are the peak growth periods of gardenia, and the survival rate of reproduction is high at this time.

How to propagate Gardenia

Gardenia cutting propagation

The time for cuttings can be chosen near the rainy season, when the germination rate is relatively high. Cut the tender branches of gardenia as cuttings, about 15 cm in length. One-year-old tender branches are also fine. You can first soak them in rooting water for two or three hours, fill the flowerpot with two-thirds of soil, and insert the branches into the soil after they are dried in the shade.

Gardenia seed propagation

Soak gardenia seeds in clean water for 2 to 3 hours, then mix with fine sand and soil before sowing. You can sow them directly on the soil box, or sow one seed every 5 cm or so. The moisture and humidity of the soil box must be maintained before transplanting.

Hydroponic gardenia propagation

First prepare a hydroponic container, cut off two-year-old gardenia branches, about 10 cm in length, soak the branches in water, and replace the water in time. After about 7 days, the branches will take root. After the roots grow longer, they can be moved to a glass container for hydroponics.

Notes on propagation of gardenia

Gardenia often suffers from leaf spot disease during the breeding process, and needs to be sprayed with mancozeb wettable powder. Insect pests include spiny moths, scale insects and whiteflies. Spiny moths can be killed with diazinon emulsifiable concentrate, and scale insects and whiteflies can be killed with omethoate emulsifiable concentrate.
