How to grow orchids in winter

How to grow orchids in winter

1. Temperature

The temperature is relatively low in winter, so it should be kept around 10-15 degrees. Short-term low temperatures above 0 degrees are also acceptable, but they cannot be kept at low temperatures for a long time, otherwise the leaves will be frozen and turn yellow. Before the temperature drops in early winter, the plants should be brought indoors for maintenance in time, and adequate ventilation conditions must be ensured. In fact, it is difficult to achieve ventilation in winter. We should try our best to create a properly ventilated environment. If conditions permit, we can add some small fans as adjustments. When ventilating, avoid direct contact with cold air blowing into the window from outside to prevent it from being damaged by freezing.

2. Lighting

In winter, it is necessary to ensure sufficient scattered light exposure. The plant cannot be exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, otherwise the leaves will turn yellow and affect the ornamental effect. It can be placed indoors in the living room.

3. Water and Fertilizer

When applying fertilizer in winter, do not apply too much or too concentrated fertilizer to avoid fertilizer damage. It is recommended to increase the phosphorus and potassium fertilizers and control the nitrogen fertilizers. This will be more conducive to the formation of flower buds, promote flowering, and also help with the outdoor production in spring. When watering, do not water unless the soil is dry, and control the water appropriately.

4. Pests and diseases

Poor indoor ventilation can easily lead to diseases and insect pests. Generally, we should spray the orchid with protective fungicide once a month. Before entering and leaving the room, we can spray Bordeaux liquid on the orchid to prevent diseases. As for scale insect pests, we should remove them in time once they occur.
