How to distinguish between Lythrum salicina and lavender

Lythrum salicina

Lythrum salicaria is a perennial herb native to some countries with temperate climates. It prefers an environment with plenty of sunlight and good ventilation, and is relatively cold-resistant. Lythrum salicina has a particularly strong adaptability and can generally grow in any type of soil. It is more common in wetlands, riverbanks, ditches and swamps. The flowers, stems and leaves of Lythrum salicaria can all be used as medicine, which has the effect of stopping bleeding and removing blood stasis. It can also treat dysentery, enteritis and other diseases.

Lavender

Everyone must be familiar with lavender. Everyone knows that its meaning is "waiting for love", which is full of romance and warmth. Although lavender is called grass, it is actually a small purple-blue flower. The scent of lavender is unique and intoxicating, making it impossible not to notice it. Lavender is added to many of our daily necessities, especially essential oils and perfumes. At the same time, lavender can also be used to make tea, which not only clears the brain and refreshes the mind, but also beautifies the skin.

The difference between the two

The height of loosestrife is between 30 cm and 100 cm. It can generally grow to about 1 meter, which is slightly taller than lavender. Its stem is quadrangular and has many branches. The leaves grow symmetrically, generally about 5 cm long and 10 cm wide. The flowers of Lythrum salicina are purple-red, in the shape of long spikes. The flowers are relatively small and grow densely. The flowering period is from July to August.

Lavender likes to grow in clumps and has many branches. It usually grows upright. The height varies according to the variety, generally ranging from 30-40 cm to 45-90 cm. However, in places with higher altitudes, some lavender can grow to a height of 1 meter. The leaves are oval with pointed tips and the edges are generally curled back. The inflorescence of lavender is spike-shaped, about 20 cm long; the lower part of the corolla is like a cylinder, and the upper part is a bit like a lip. The most common color of lavender is purple-blue, but there are other colors of lavender, such as pink, dark purple, white, etc. The flowering period is from June to August.
