What to do if bougainvillea root rots

What to do if bougainvillea root rots

Causes of root rot

Improper watering

In fact, the main reason for root rot of bougainvillea is improper watering.

The root rot of bougainvillea is mostly caused by overwatering. Although bougainvillea prefers a humid growing environment, it is actually very afraid of waterlogging. If you water too much, water will easily accumulate. Stagnant water can easily lead to many problems, the most obvious of which is root rot.

Pot soil problem

The potting soil is also the cause of root rot in bougainvillea. If the flowerpot is small, it will not be suitable for the growth of bougainvillea and the roots will not be able to extend. The soil needs to be loose, fertile and breathable, but sometimes the soil itself is too sticky, or the soil becomes compacted due to water accumulation, which can easily lead to poor root growth or even rot of Bougainvillea.

what to do

prevention

Good management is needed during daily maintenance to prevent root rot.

Watering needs to be based on the growth conditions of the plants. Don't water too frequently. Water after the soil becomes dry, and water thoroughly.

The flowerpot needs to be replaced according to the growth of the bougainvillea plant, but it is best to replace it once a year. The soil needs to be loose and breathable. When applying soil, you can add a drainage layer in the flowerpot, and you can also add some river sand into the soil to increase permeability.

Be careful to avoid standing water.

Root rot treatment

For bougainvillea whose roots have rotted, there are two situations. If the root rot is mild, you can cut off the rotten roots, let the wound heal and then plant again; if the root rot is severe, you can only propagate it again, and you can choose cuttings or grafting.
