How to propagate Aspidistra

How to propagate Aspidistra

1. Division time

It is usually propagated by division. First, choose the right time, usually in spring, because the temperature is rising at this time and the new buds have not yet grown. It is the best time to repot. In addition, from January to February every year, the soil has begun to thaw, and you can start dividing the plants after the thawing is over.

2. Carry out division

Remove the mother plant from the pot and remove any excess soil, trying to separate the roots without damaging them. You can use a sharp knife to split the plants in the middle to ensure that each plant has enough roots. In addition, 3 to 5 leaves should be left on each plant, and the rest can be cut off, which can increase its survival rate.

3. Disinfection

After the plants are separated, they are more fragile and easily infected by pathogens, so they need to be properly disinfected. You can use the prepared thiophanate-methyl solution and soak the plants in it for 5 minutes. Then take out the plants and dry them before proceeding with other processing.

4. Put it in the basin

It is not suitable for growing in a humid environment, so before potting it, you need to add a water filter layer at the bottom of the pot and then put it in. There are many substrates for potting, and you can choose according to your own conditions. Usually, as long as the nutrients are sufficient and the drainage is good, it will be fine. After potting, you need to water it. If it has not been disinfected before, you need to water the roots and place it in a shaded place for maintenance.

5. Management

After the division is completed, you need to water the plant once. Because the roots are severely damaged, it will take 3 to 4 weeks to recover, so water less during this period to prevent the roots from rotting.
