So how many times a year should black corn be planted? Let’s learn more about it below.

How many times a year is black corn planted?

The number of maize stubbles varies in different regions and planting patterns. In areas with warm climate and suitable soil conditions, two or even three crops a year can be achieved. In the Northeast region with a colder climate, generally only one crop can be planted.

How to grow black corn?

1. Variety selection

Choose black corn varieties that are suitable for the local planting environment and market demand, such as Italian black corn, Korean Zijinxiang black corn, Kaoshan black corn, etc.

2. Seed treatment

(1) Seed drying: Place the seeds in the sun one week before sowing to increase the germination rate.

(2) Seed soaking: Soak the seeds in 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution for half a day, then drain and germinate.

(3) Germination: Place the seeds in an environment of 30 degrees for germination until 70%-80% of the seeds turn white.

3. Sowing time

Black corn is suitable for planting in most corn-growing areas in China. It can be sown in spring or summer, from late March to mid-June, and the latest sowing date is no later than June 15th.

4. Sowing method

Select land with good fertility, moderate pH, convenient irrigation and drainage, and sufficient soil moisture for fine sowing. Sow two seeds in each hole, generally at a depth of 3 to 5 cm, and then cover with soil. Avoid covering the soil too thickly and with varying depths.

5. Isolation planting

To avoid mixing corn flour with other corn varieties, black corn should be planted in isolation, with an interval of more than 350 to 400 meters.

6. Reasonable density of planting

Determine the planting density reasonably based on variety characteristics, soil fertility, sowing date, planting method and market demand. The general density is 3000-3500 plants per mu.

In general, considering the above factors, farmers can choose the most suitable planting pattern and number of crops according to local conditions. At the same time, master the correct sowing method to achieve high yield and efficient planting of black corn.
